The 2025 Grand National Super Series Presented By ECC season has started off with a bang, hosting two thrilling 50 lap spectacles at the newly reopened and renovated Newport Speedway. With defending champion Jeremy Mayfield switching over to D2 Motorsports, AJ Henriksen recovering from injury, and a handful of rookies looking to make their mark on the series, it was anyone’s guess as to how things would play out.

Sporting the new #46, AJ Henriksen took home the ChaLew Performance Pole Award, but would drop back to fifth due to the invert. That put former ARCA racer and GNSS rookie Jamie Mosely on the pole. It wouldn’t take long for Henriksen along with Mayfield to make their marks known, soon controlling the front of the field. For Mosely, things took a turn for the worse as the #11 went spinning midway through the race. Putting on a show for the fans in the stands, Mosely made a spirited charge back through the field, ultimately crossing under the checkered in fourth. In front, it was a joyous occasion for Henriksen. Breaking a winless drought of nearly a year, Henriksen was able to outduel Mayfield for a much needed boost in confidence. Coming home an impressive third was Mayfield’s D2 teammate, Kody Brusso, known for her Outlaw/Sportsman racing escapades in the FloriBama region. Bob Schacht took the final spot in the top 5 as the fans were more than excited for second go around.
Sporting the ECC white colors this year is the #18 of Chris Burns, who inherits the top starting spot for race two. Second place Mosely wasted no time, cutting in front of Burns in an effort to better his fourth place run in race one. Almost exactly mirroring the first race, it was again Mayfield and Henriksen who eventually took control. The race was slowed by one incident, a spin from popular YouTuber Mitchell Stapleton, just trying to log laps and learn the ropes of his GNSS machine. The final 5 laps will go down as some of the most exciting in GNSS histor, with two of the best in the young tour’s history duking it out tooth and nail. Taking advantage of lap traffic on the final lap, Jeremy Mayfield was able to eke out in the lead ahead of Henriksen, taking his 12th career series victory. Brusso again made her name known in third while Mosely and Burns rounded out the top 5. While coming up just short of the sweep, Henriksen’s efforts were good enough to earn himself a pair of Howe Racing Enterprises Hard Charger Awards.
To say Newport was thrilling would be an understatement. Next on the docket is Dominion Raceway, making up for a rainout earlier in the year. A fantastic field of drivers and cars are expected, with the return of JJ Pack being a major headline after engine troubles sidelined him from Newport.
